007 First Light
007 First Light is a third-person action-adventure game developed by IO Interactive and published with Amazon MGM Studios. Released worldwide on May 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, it is the first major James Bond video game in over a decade.
About the Game
First Light is a fully original origin story. Players control a 26-year-old James Bond, portrayed by Patrick Gibson, a Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6. The project was first teased as Project 007 in late 2020, then officially revealed as First Light during a Sony PlayStation State of Play. Reports put the budget at roughly 200 million dollars, with about 7 years in production.
Gameplay draws on IO Interactive’s stealth and action pedigree from the Hitman series. Players can approach objectives through stealth, bluffing, or full-on action, depending on how they read each situation. Q Branch gadgets include the Q-Lens, Q-Watch, Laser Strap, Dart Phone, Smoke Pod, and Flash Mine. A Tactical Simulation mode led by Dr. Selina Tan lets players replay missions with specific conditions, complete with global leaderboards.
The score was composed by The Flight and recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Chamber Orchestra. The title song is performed by Lana Del Rey, written by Lana Del Rey and David Arnold. It marks Arnold’s return to Bond after scoring 5 films.
Story
First Light follows Bond from Royal Navy air crewman to MI6 recruit. Rather than starting as the seasoned agent audiences know, the game shows the making of one. Bond is 26, headstrong, and not yet a 00. The 00 status is something he has to earn, and the story traces that climb.
The supporting cast includes Priyanga Burford as M, Lennie James as former 00 agent John Greenway, and Lenny Kravitz as the antagonist Bawma. The plot centers on Bond’s first major assignment, a conspiracy that pulls him deeper into MI6’s world and forces him to prove he belongs.
Critical reception has been strong. On Metacritic, the PS5 version sits at 88 based on 47 reviews, and OpenCritic scores it 89 with Mighty status. By August 2026, the game had sold 4 million copies worldwide.
