Adele — Skyfall

Skyfall is the theme song for the 2012 James Bond film of the same name, performed by Adele. Written by Adele and Paul Epworth, it was released on 5 October 2012, two weeks before the film premiered in London. It was the first Bond theme to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and the first to win a Golden Globe and a Brit Award in the same cycle.

The Song

Adele recorded the track at Abbey Road Studios with a 77-piece orchestra arranged by J.A.C. Redford. The song runs just under five minutes, making it one of the longest Bond themes ever released. It opens with a piano figure that echoes the Monty Norman James Bond Theme without quoting it directly, then builds through two verses and a chorus before resolving on the title line: “Skyfall, when it crumbles, we will stand tall.”

Lyrically, the song leans into themes of loyalty, endings, and the cost of a life spent in service. Adele wrote it after reading the script, and the final version reflects the film’s central tension between Bond and M. The line “Let the sky fall, when it crumbles” is often read as a farewell to Judi Dench’s M, whose death is the emotional core of the film.

Commercially, Skyfall was a phenomenon. It debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the first Bond theme to do so. It peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100, the highest placement for a Bond song since Duran Duran’s A View to a Kill in 1985. By 2023, it had sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

The Soundtrack

The film’s score was composed by Thomas Newman, marking his first Bond film. Newman had previously worked with director Sam Mendes on American Beauty, Road to Perdition, and Revolutionary Road. His score for Skyfall was nominated for a BAFTA and a Grammy, though it lost the Oscar to Mychael Danna’s Life of Pi.

Newman’s approach avoided direct quotation of the Monty Norman theme in most cues, saving it for key moments. The score uses a smaller ensemble than earlier Bond films, leaning on strings, piano, and percussion rather than brass-heavy arrangements. The track “Komodo Dragon” and “Shanghai Drive” are often cited as highlights, blending electronic textures with orchestral writing in a way that matched the film’s modern tone.

The soundtrack album was released on 29 October 2012 by Sony Classical. A deluxe edition added four bonus tracks, including extended versions of “Skyfall” and “Old Dog, New Tricks.”

Legacy

Skyfall reset expectations for what a Bond theme could be. Before Adele, the franchise had spent the 2000s cycling through rock and pop crossovers: Madonna, Chris Cornell, Jack White and Alicia Keys. Skyfall brought the theme back to a torch song tradition that traced back to Shirley Bassey, and the Oscar win validated it. Billie Eilish’s No Time to Die in 2020 followed the same template, and it also won the Academy Award.

Adele has never performed the song live in full. She has said in interviews that she does not remember writing it clearly, and that the experience of recording with an orchestra was overwhelming. The song remains her only Bond contribution.
